2024 Sanala
Summer Webinar Series

In Summer of 2024, Sa̱nala Planning presented a summer webinar series, led by CEO Jessie Hemphill and Senior Planner Dana Moraes.

Jessie and Dana drew on their decades of experience and condensed it into two-hour virtual sessions on proposal writing, community engagement, plan implementation, pre-contact Indigenous planning, Planning for Joy, and Comprehensive Community Planning (CCP) 101.

The webinar series offered sliding-scale pricing from $100-$300 + fees per webinar, as well as a limited number of free seats for BIPOC, 2SLGTBQQIA+, youth, and disabled participants

These webinars are ideal bite-size professional development for Indigenous and non-Indigenous planners, planning students, and interested community members.

Proposal Writing

Effective proposal writing can help Indigenous communities bring our plans to life by finding the resources needed to move your vision forward. It can be a daunting process, but there are some approaches that can help make it easier and more successful.

In this webinar you will learn where to find funding to support planning and implementation, share tips and tricks for proposal writing, and determine how community wealth can tie into the planning process.

Community Engagement

In this webinar, presenters Dana and Jessie draw on decades of experience designing and facilitating community engagement processes for First Nations and others. We will teach a holistic approach to community engagement, developing an engagement strategy, and share resources for learning more about communications, engagement and facilitation.

Plan Implementation

Moving from CCP planning to implementation can be a big challenge. Join planner Dana Moraes as she shares ways to keep your community-based plan and members at the centre of the work of community, building community capacity and Comprehensive Community Plan (CCP) implementation.

Planning for Joy

Inspired by Designing for Joy, in this webinar we will explore the idea of Planning for Joy. This concept, developed by presenter Jessie Hemphill, suggests that planners can curb burnout and engagement fatigue by infusing our planning work with more joy, for ourselves and others.

We will also talk about relationships between joy and grief/trauma, toxic positivity, and how Planning for Joy can be used as a tool for decolonizing planning.

Pre-Contact Indigenous Planning

Indigenous Peoples have been master planners since time immemorial. In this webinar Jessie will share stories and examples of brilliant community design, mutually beneficial lands and ecosystem relationships and stewardship practices, urban design, and adaptive architecture - all from pre-European-contact Turtle Island.

This webinar is designed for Indigenous and non-Indigenous planners and planning students who seek to round out their historical perspectives on planning and learn how to recognize local Indigenous planning approaches in order to inform your own work.

Comprehensive Community Planning (CCP) 101

This webinar is a crash course in Indigenous Comprehensive Community Planning (CCP) - a holistic, community-driven approach to long-term planning used by hundreds of First Nations across so-called-Canada.

In this webinar we will talk about how a CCP fits into the “Ecosystem of Indigenous Planning” - how it differs from a strategic plan, workplan, Official Community Plan and other types of plans. We will talk about the four phases of a CCP process and key do’s and don’ts, and we will share lots of resources and helpful tips.

FAQs

What is the cost?

We are using a sliding scale pricing model to try and support folks who might not otherwise be able to afford to attend. You might use the following rationale to decide which price to select:

$100 - The supported rate is meant for folks who have limited funds and do not have an employer covering the cost of the webinar.

$200 - The standard rate is meant for folks with an employer covering the cost or folks using personal funds who do not struggle to meet their basic needs.

$300 - The pay it forward rate is meant for folks with an employer covering this amount and/or those who wish to contribute to folks accessing the supported rate or the free seats.

We are also offering a limited number of free seats for BIPOC, 2SLGTBQQIA+, youth, and disabled participants. Please contact us directly at events@sanalaplanning.com if you’d like to request one of these free seats or talk about special group pricing.

Do I need to register for both times/dates for the same webinar?

No, each two-hour session is a standalone webinar. We are offering one morning and one afternoon option for each to try and make them more accessible AND to try and get a better sense of which option works best as we plan future offerings.

So I’ve registered - now what?

Yay, we can’t wait to see you! Stay tuned for an email with the Zoom link and other relevant details before the date/time of your webinar.

What happens if I have to cancel?

No worries! We will be recording each webinar and sharing the recordings, along with follow-up materials, to all registered participants so that you can watch it at your own leisure.
